A PERFECT HARMONY...TO MAKE FINE CANTERBURY WINE
Te Kiteroa Lodge nestles at the foot of the Hunters Hills in Waimate. Built in 1913 as a private residence, the lodge has a fascinating history and is well known for its tranquillity, proximity to the native bush and panoramic coastal views. The lodge is currently run as a guest lodge and cellar door with estate wine distributed under the brand, Point Bush Estates.
The location’s unique micro-climate, being a frost-free area with light loam/clay soil and north-facing slopes, was a strong factor behind the decision to establish the 3-hectare vineyard and olive grove in 2004. Premium Pinot Noir is grown with temperate coastal conditions allowing the fruit characters to fully develop during a protracted ripening season.
The local terroir correspondingly suits Pinot Gris and whilst the Sauvignon Blanc would be one of the most southern vineyards (almost latitude 45° south), it is picked as late as possible and the fruity characters reflect the long ripening and late autumn sun.
Great wine is made in the vineyard! Point Bush has about 12,000 vines, all of which are hand tended from bud burst in spring to canopy management during the growth period of summer through to netting off the challenges of bird strike in autumn as the brix levels rise. Our winery is equipped to handle all processing from the vineyard to the bottle or, as we say, from paddock to palate. Point Bush Estates is a family owned and operated winery producing around 1,000 cases per year as well as some contract wine making for other, smaller vineyards in the region.
